INTRODUCTION

Beckman Coulter Inc. is a Danaher Corporation company that develops, manufactures, and markets
products that simplify, automate and innovate complex biomedical testing. It operates in two
industries: Diagnostics and Life Sciences.

Beckman’s operation was situated in Midrand and consisted of several functions, namely:

  • Offices
  • Training centres
  • Warehousing
    • Ambient storage: 18 – 24 deg C
    • Chiller: 2 – 8 deg C
    • Freezer: -20 deg C
    • Freezer: -40 deg C
  • Service parts
  • Workshops

Beckman has operated from their premises in Midrand for in the order of 20 years and had outgrown the space. Multiple additional fridges were built and an offsite warehouse was hired to accommodate packaging material and returned diagnostic equipment and machines.

Temperature control was critical, a temperature excursion of 2-3 degrees for 4 hours could result in millions of dollars of reagents being quarantined and destroyed.

From 2017 to 2020, several potential sites were identified and layouts and budgets were prepared for board approval. In 2020 the preferred site was found in Samrand, it was a Greenfield site, owned by Growthpoint. Designs and layouts were finalised.

The key design features are shown below:

FEEDBACK

A new era started today when Beckman Coulter South Africa picked and successfully shipped our first order from the new warehouse in Lanner Falcon Road in Samrand. After a massive 5 day effort from Deon, Gert and their passionate and committed team and with the dedicated support of Johann Aucamp and Nico Nel, we flawlessly moved the warehouse from Growthpoint Park to our brand new premises. Even an 8 hour power failure could not deter the team as the new generator kicked in smoothly to keep the lights on.

It is difficult for me to express my sincerest gratitude to the whole L&D team who made this possible and who helped us with so much enthusiasm throughout this past weekend. Not one complaint or disgruntled face.

Your engagement  means so much to me. You are indeed an amazing team.

Well done and congratulations.
